Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background

Sustainability is one of the core values of Volvo Cars. Human health has been the central focus for our development. Emission has a great impact on human health. While legislations have driven down emissions of particles from exhausts, the non-exhaust proportion of road traffic emissions has increased, and traffic is deemed to be one of the most important contributors to particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere. On a global scale, human exposure to these air-borne PMs is hazardous and can cause a significant impact on human health. Lowering air pollution in urban areas is crucial to reduce ambient toxicity levels and maintain good air quality.

Major contributors to these non-exhaust emissions are tyre wear particles (TWP) and brake wear particles (BWP). These emissions are becoming even more important for battery electrical vehicles (BEVs), since electrical vehicles are typically heavier than conventional ones and, hence, they require larger tyres and brakes leading to projected particle emission to grow in the future. With this background, the European Parliament is expected to impose stringent testing and measurement conditions with Euro 7 vehicle emissions standards including regulations for both tyre and brake wear particles.

Scope

The overall aim of the thesis work is to investigate the ways to trace and measure tyre (and brake) emissions both numerically and experimentally as well as study possible solutions for decreasing the non-exhaust particle emissions from vehicles. The students are expected to:

  • Work with numerical simulations to simulate particle emissions.
  • Propose designs for measuring equipment and make comparison.
  • Propose designs for capturing the particles and make comparison.

What you´ll bring

The successful candidates are expected to have:

  • Master student in Mechanical/Automotive engineering.
  • Ability to take initiatives and work independently.
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics and CFD simulations.

The thesis requires the students to be physically presented in Gothenburg, Volvo Cars Corporation

Duration

  • The work will start in January 2024, to be discussed.
  • The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
  • 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
  • This thesis is to be conducted by 2 Students working in pair.
